Sanitary wear options- for a GREENER YOU

Sanitary wear options- for a GREENER YOU

If you ever heard the saying: ‘Diamonds Are Forever– “try soiled disposable sanitary pads” the plastic in a pad will take hundreds of years before decomposing. Last year I did a piece for Sparrow school on the sanitary pad donation drive that takes place yearly during Women’s Month. This lead me to receive a lot of emails with questions like, how will the girls sustain this? aren’t reusable pads the best option for a long term? – ‘great questions but, I too didn’t have the answers. This transported me-to-a mental space where I needed to find other ways to help the girls stay in school, be cost effective and environmentally safe. This transported me-to-a mental space where I needed to find other ways to help girls stay in school, be cost-effective and environmentally-safe. Off course reusable sanitary wear is the best, so I started on research to see, what we have available in South African or the continent at large.

I would like you to consider looking at these options as we are approaching Woman’s Month is 2-months to be exact, I am pretty sure there’s going to be a number of drives taking place in the country (South Africa) I am sharing with you, my findings on alternative natural menstrual solutions for a greener community. This is not just investing in the environment but an investment to women’s health, please note: these are just suggestions, do your homework for a product that is best for you.

Sanitary cotton pads

Talk about going back to time, but with a twist of style, comfort and less to no leakage if used correctly. Cotton pads designed like a pad with layers of cotton all washable and can be reused for 2-3 years. With 6 different sizes to choose from depending on your flow and age, they come with wings that snap underneath your underwear and stays therefore in place, permitting that your underwear fits snug with comfort. When it comes to choosing pads, comfort, cost and flow coverage is very important. Hannah pad has you covered in all of the above, the initial cost is a lot but long term it’s a great saving and can be bought from their online store Hannah pad south africa

The good

– Comfortable

– Machine washable

The bad

– Initial outlay

– Potential hand washing

The best

– Eco-friendly

– Size options

–  Non-toxic

Sanitary menstrual cup

I am so excited to share this with you because I remember the first time I heard of the menstrual cup, it seemed like it was had to access and very expensive. But I always was curious to know if it was safe to use?. During my research, I found that there are so many women using the menstrual cup. And almost all the women I spoke to were happy to have made the switch. The Mcup is made from medically approved silicone that is 100% pure which means no impurities like colour. It is comfortable and safe for women at all ages, this product is manufactured in an FDA certified factory. And I love the fact that the storage bag provided with each Mcup is made by a community project based in a small town of Ottery in the Western Cape. Another great way to empower woman. One woman, one cup for 5-years is all you need (talk about being financially smart) the Mcup can be purchased from Takealot online stores and can also just go through to their Website to find a stockist near you.

The good

– Discreet

– Hygienic

– 2 size options

– Comfortable

– No leakage

The Bad

–  Might be messy at first

–  May break the hymen

The Best

–  1 cup, 1 girl, 5 year

–  Eco-friendly

–  Cost-effective

–  Ideal for athletes

–  Proudly South African certified

Sea Sponge

Crazy right? I know these are 100% natural, biodegradable Mediterranean sea sponges they sustainability harvested, bringing you a greener and cleaner alternative to ordinary tampons. Sea sponge tampons are free of harsh chemicals, plus these menstrual sponges can be reused for 4-6 months before they start to break down. It is, however, best to check and clean your sponge before your first use, because the may still have particles of coral or shell (talk about a natural product) My worry was, will I be able to find this product in South Africa? it turns out I can. My go-to online store Faithul to nature for all environmental safe goods, they keep stock of the Woman-Kind next to nothing.

The good

– Natural

– Comfortable

– Last 4-6 months

The bad

–  Too natural

– May have sea particles

The best

– Cost effective

–  Easy to use

Wow this is so interesting!! I am curious to learn more about the piece for the Sparrow (I think it was?) that you did! I knew there had to be better options than pads and tampons… they do create a lot of waste. I know a lot of women who use the diva cup or something similar and LOVE it!

This is awesome and super well researched! My friend uses a menstrual cup and lives by it, but it makes me a little hesitant. The green initiative of it is fantastic but the “icky” factor creeps me out a little
